Running races

Running race timing

Chip timing for fun runs, 5K and 10K road races, trail runs, half marathons and relays. Every runner gets an accurate time from the moment they cross the start to the moment they cross the finish, with results live as they come in.

What you get

  • Gun time and chip time. A mat at the start records each runner's own start, so runners at the back of a big field or in a later wave get a fair net time.
  • Checkpoint splits. Halfway, aid stations, the summit of a hill climb: add a timing point anywhere on the course.
  • Live results by category, gender and age group, on phones and a big screen at the finish.
  • A results page for every runner, with their splits, and a CSV export for you.

Courses we time

  • Road races: 5K, 10K, half marathons and longer.
  • Trail and mountain runs: side aerials work at checkpoints where there's no flat ground for a mat. Readers can store crossings and upload them when they're back in phone signal.
  • Loop and lap courses: track events, multi-lap park courses, timed-lap ultras.
  • Relays: team handovers timed at the exchange.
  • Fun runs and community events, from a school fundraiser to a few thousand runners.

Planning race day

  1. Confirm the course and where you want splits.
  2. Entries: we can run registration and payments, or import your entry list.
  3. Pack pickup: each runner gets a numbered, reusable chip on an ankle strap, matched to their entry.
  4. Race day: mats at the start and finish, mats or aerials at checkpoints, results live from the first finisher.
  5. At the finish: chips are collected for reuse, and results are already published.

What it costs

The same hire pricing as every Split Line event: a base timing kit is $1,450 per event (up to 3 days), extra timing points are $290 each, reusable chips are $1.50 per participant, and the live results portal is priced by event size from $390. An on-site technician is $650 per day plus travel. All prices NZD excluding GST; freight at cost.

FAQ

Questions

What's the difference between gun time and chip time?

Gun time runs from the official start signal. Chip time, or net time, runs from when the runner actually crosses the start mat, so runners further back in the field or in later waves aren't penalised. Split Line records both.

Do runners keep the chips?

No. Chips are reusable, numbered and worn on an ankle strap. They're collected at the finish line.

Can you time trail runs with checkpoints away from power and phone signal?

Yes, with planning. Readers need power at each checkpoint, and where there's no signal they store every crossing and upload it later. Tell us about the course and we'll plan the checkpoints with you.

Can you time a relay?

Yes. Team members' handovers are timed at the exchange, and the team gets a total time along with each leg.
